Our story
Built around one working relationship at a time.
COLLINS OTIENO OCHIENG began as a way to give independent reporters the kind of second opinion a newsroom colleague would usually provide.
Origin
COLLINS OTIENO OCHIENG started after years of watching capable reporters publish good work with no one to check it against — no editor down the hall, no colleague to flag a thin source before it went out. The gap wasn't talent. It was company.
What began as informal review sessions for a handful of freelancers in Nairobi grew, slowly and without much fanfare, into a small structured practice. The approach never changed much: read carefully, ask honest questions, leave the decisions with the writer.
Today COLLINS OTIENO OCHIENG works with reporters across Kenya, from those filing their first pieces to writers preparing to launch their own small outlets.
What we hold to
Three values, kept plain
01
Honesty over comfort
If a claim needs another source, we say so directly, even when the deadline is close.
02
The writer decides
We explain our reasoning and leave the final judgment with the person who wrote the piece.
03
Small and durable
We favour setups and habits that a single reporter can maintain for years, not ones that need a team.
